Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) Certification by Progression Vertical

Ever wondered what it actually takes to run a safe, professional climbing program, not just climb well yourself, but teach others to do it safely?

This CWI certification, developed by the Climbing Wall Association (CWA), is the internationally recognized standard for indoor climbing instruction. Delivered through Progression Vertical, it combines self-paced online modules with a hands-on, in-person assessment led by experienced climbing professionals.

An optional prep day is available beforehand for participants with limited climbing experience, giving extra hands-on practice before the formal assessment. From there, participants are evaluated across bouldering, top rope/auto belay, and lead climbing instruction, covering facility inspection, client orientation, and emergency procedures along the way.

Here’s How You Will Benefit

By the end of this masterclass, you will:

  • Obtain an internationally recognized CWI Certification (valid for 3 years), covering the level(s) you register for
  • Know how to inspect climbing equipment and facilities to industry safety standards
  • Confidently orient and instruct new clients on a climbing wall
  • Teach bouldering and spotting technique (Level 1)
  • Teach top rope and auto belay skills (Level 2)
  • Teach lead climbing skills (Level 3, optional)
  • Understand risk management and emergency procedures specific to climbing walls

Suradet “Ooan” Kongsingh is a Lead Climbing Instructor with the Progression facilitator team, where he has been climbing and instructing for over 20 years. He has developed and honed his facilitation skills with Progression and is one of the highest trained climbing instructors in Thailand, holding both CWI (Climbing Wall Instructor) certification and AMGA (American Mountain Guide Association) certification.
